Embedding carbon and energy analysis into GreenScale’s EMEA Reference Design to support more informed sustainability decisions across future data centre developments.

GreenScale commissioned its EMEA Reference Design to create a repeatable blueprint for future data centre developments, capable of adapting to different locations and customer requirements. The brief combined scalable infrastructure with faster deployment and long-term operational efficiency, while preparing the design for evolving technologies including AI workloads and hybrid liquid cooling.

Working closely with GreenScale, Ethos developed the RIBA Stage 2 concept design, bringing M&E engineering and sustainability expertise together within one reference framework. This allowed energy performance and embodied carbon to inform the engineering from the outset, giving GreenScale evidence to support key decisions before future site-specific designs are developed.

Ethos developed a Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment methodology tailored to the carbon profile of data centres, considering both CSA and MEP systems. We then used Life Cycle Assessment to compare structural and material strategies at concept stage. The lowest-carbon structural option assessed demonstrated potential A1-A3 embodied carbon reductions of 43% against the concrete baseline, showing GreenScale where material selection could have a significant impact as the design progresses.

Operational energy was assessed with the same early-stage approach. Ethos used parametric energy modelling to test how different engineering decisions could affect performance. For the representative 24MW phase, the improved mechanical scenario achieved a modelled PUE of 1.32 compared with 1.41 in the base case, helping identify opportunities to improve energy performance before detailed design.

The resulting Engineering Design Requirements carry this work forward through LCA methodology, energy modelling and wider sustainability requirements. This gives GreenScalea consistent evidence base that future project teams can adapt to local climate, regulation and site conditions as the reference design moves into site-specific development.
