Helping Diageo expand sustainably by designing an innovative campus powered by renewable technologies. All while meeting strategic environmental goals and putting them on track for future success.

Diageo was investing €200 million in a major greenfield brewery to meet growing global demand. Bringing brewing production, on-site energy generation, water treatment, administration, welfare facilities and site infrastructure together on one campus was a complex engineering challenge. Every system had to work seamlessly, while hitting sustainability targets set out in Diageo’s 2030 strategy.

Creating a zero-carbon campus shaped every aspect of the project. As mechanical, electrical and energy compliance consultants, a critical part of our work was managing the technical interfaces across multiple complex systems – brewing operations, on-site energy generation, water treatment processes – as well as multiple Diageo stakeholders.

We took an integrated approach, looking at the system as a whole. By coordinating utilities, building services and process requirements, and advising on renewable energy and advanced water recovery and reuse systems, we created a campus designed for long-term performance.

Today, the brewery makes Rockshore, Harp, Hop House 13, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny and Carlsberg. Its design cuts emissions by 15,000 tonnes each year, while using far less water. By bringing down interface risk and designing adaptable, climate-resilient energy and water infrastructure, Diageo now has a high-performance brewery that sets it up for a sustainable future.
