Supporting the growing power demands of EdgeConneX’s data centre campus in Sweden meant expanding an existing substation without compromising its ongoing operation. The project involves increasing capacity from four to five 120MW transformer bays, with provision for a sixth. It also requires reconfiguring the existing air-insulated switchgear (AIS) yard from a single to a dual incomer arrangement, with additional busbars and interconnections.
Working within an operational substation brings a distinct set of engineering challenges. Existing electrical infrastructure must be carefully reconfigured while limiting disruption to critical data centre operations. Sweden’s harsh winter conditions add further complexity, with freezing temperatures and potential snow drifts influencing the design of external services and equipment.
As mechanical, fire engineering and ICT consultants, Ethos is responsible for designing the control room’s mechanical systems, fire alarm and ICT installations. Our scope also includes fire engineering services and specialist input into the substation yard’s security design.
A key feature of the project is the use of modular switchgear and control room designs, allowing these elements to be constructed off-site and positioned within the existing substation. This approach supports more efficient installation and is designed to reduce disruption to live operations.
Climate resilience is also central to the design. By considering extreme winter temperatures, potential snow accumulation and heat tracing requirements for external services, the engineering solutions are designed to support reliable performance throughout Sweden’s demanding seasonal conditions.
Currently at detailed design stage, the project is progressing towards an expanded, more adaptable substation. Through coordinated engineering and a focus on operational continuity, the design will support EdgeConneX’s evolving infrastructure requirements while providing the flexibility needed for future growth.
