At a hyperscale data centre campus in Dublin, the client required a robust medium voltage infrastructure strategy to integrate large-scale on-site dual-fuel gas generation into the campus power distribution network. The objective was to create a stable, resilient islanded power system capable of supporting critical data centre loads without reliance on a utility grid.
Ethos delivered the MV infrastructure design for the generator integration, developing the interface between the on-site gas generator output and the campus 20kV MV distribution network. This included the design of MV switchgear systems forming the primary connection point between the energy centre and the data centre loads, as well as the coordination of generator-to-MV interfaces, cabling, routing and connection into the generator yard infrastructure.
A key focus was ensuring that the system could operate safely and reliably as a fully islanded network. Ethos developed the protection and control philosophy for the MV network, including robust MV protection schemes, inter-tripping arrangements and high-speed communication between generators and switchgear. The design also incorporated automated switching and interlocking logic to prevent unsafe paralleling and maintain overall system stability.
The project required close coordination between electrical infrastructure, generation plant, control systems and operational requirements. Dual redundant PLC-based control systems were integrated to provide monitoring and operational control of the MV network, while system response strategies were developed for generator trip events and dynamic load conditions within the islanded environment. By combining MV design, protection coordination and practical operational sequencing, Ethos helped create a resilient power platform capable of maintaining continuous supply to critical data centre loads.
